Success on and off the court

Our Jane Boyd kids love playing in the gymnasium. It’s one of the greatest assets of holding our Achievement Academy programming at Jane Boyd, both after school and during the summer. When the children arrive, they’re ready to have fun and burn off excess energy – and the gym provides that opportunity. Plus, we all know the many benefits of physical activity for kids. It helps them concentrate, work off frustration and anger, and stay healthy, to name a few.

Van Meter Industrial understands the importance of physical activity for our kids. When Nick D’Amico, Director of the Achievement Academy, expressed that he would love to start a summer basketball league but would need portable basketball hoops to do so, Van Meter stepped up to the challenge. Within days of that conversation, a $600 check arrived at Four Oaks from Van Meter’s fund at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to purchase two portable basketball hoops.

Now, the Jane Boyd Basketball League is a reality. From July through September, boys and girls entering 1st and 2nd grades had the opportunity to play 3-on-3 basketball on two “mini” full-courts that were set up using the portable hoops. In addition to encouraging physical activity, the league encouraged positive social interactions and teamwork among the participants.

We are grateful for Van Meter Industrial’s involvement and support throughout the year, including financial donations, volunteerism, gifts for our Holiday Project and more.
