PUSH-CR opens the door to success for local families This past Thanksgiving RJ and Alisha had a lot to be thankful for as they had just learned that they would soon be moving into an apartment of their own through the Partners United for Supportive Housing in Cedar Rapids (PUSH-CR) program.

PUSH-CR is a supportive housing program created through collaboration between Four Oaks and 22 community partners. It is designed for families who have an open DHS case, are homeless or unstably housed, have additional service needs, and have extremely low income.

When she learned that she, her boyfriend and infant daughter would soon be moving into their new apartment, Alisha said, “I couldn't believe it at first. He told me over the phone and I thought, ‘No, it can't be us.’”

PUSH-CR families transition to safe and affordable housing within 14 days of enrollment and receive individualized services and support to meet their goals of becoming self-sufficient. The ultimate goal is to reduce child welfare involvement and provide stable, permanent housing for families and their children. The idea is that if families with children have a place to consistently call home, those children are more likely to stay safe.

Alisha and RJ moved in to their apartment on November 29th, and they are doing well. In addition to having stable housing RJ has recently enrolled in the Jane Boyd PATHS program and is completing his work experience at the Smith Center campus. RJ and Alisha are the first of what will be 125 families enrolled in PUSH-CR over the next five years. Eleven families have been housed so far.

When Alisha and Randy moved into their new apartment at AHNI’s Cedar Valley Townhomes, they opened the door to a fully furnished space complete with a pack-n-play for their daughter. In order to furnish apartments for the remaining families in the program PUSH-CR needs contributions of household supplies.
